About Us

Richard Dunham has been designing for a variety of entertainment organizations for over thirty years. He received his MFA degree from Ohio State University in the dual areas of Lighting and Scenic Design and continues to design lighting and scenery for a variety of theatre, dance and music organizations/artists along the east coast and mid- west. Design projects have ranged from shoe-string budgets to budgets totalling thousands of dollars in venues seating less than fifty audience members to facilities that accommodate tens of thousands of spectators. While most of his credits are in theatrical productions such as drama/plays, dance and musical theatre; he also designs for artists and musical groups that include club acts, special events and festivals. Dunham has several hundred design credits, including: Off and Off-Off Broadway, numerous projects in the metropolitan NY region, regional theatres and academic institutions. His niche is in musical theatre with many design credits in musical theatre, dance production, and opera/lyric theatre as well as designing for many solo and group artists/performers. He is a member of The United States Institute of Theatre Technology (USITT) and has served the institute in a variety of leadership roles, including: Board Member and long standing Lighting Commissioner from 1998 - 2006.

In addition to design and consulting for entertainment projects, Richard also designs architectural and landscape lighting under the practice of Dunham Design Associates. Projects in which he has provided design consultation include residential and commercial projects, houses of worship and landscape lighting as well as design and consultation services for entertainment clubs and facilities. He holds the NCQLP --LC Certification (National Council for Qualifications for the Lighting Profession --Lighting Certified), is a member of The Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) and an associate member of The International Association of Lighting Designers (IALS).

In addition to continuing a freelance design practice and being the proprietor of Dunham Design Associates, Dunham has over twenty-five years of experience in teaching lighting and scenic design in higher education. He currently serves as Head of Design and is a tenured full professor at the University of Georgia. Other university appointments have been at the University of Central Florida, Vanderbilt University, SUNY at Stonybrook and Stephen's College. He makes frequent presentations and conducts workshops at professional organizations, has written articles and book reviews for trade publications and is the author of the popular lighting textbook/reference Stage Lighting: Fundamentals and Applications (Allyn and Bacon of Pearson Publications, 2010).
